Certification Process

To test mineral fiber batt and blanket insulation, the NAHB Research Center extracts thermal test specimens from three different thickness locations and three different length locations within a batt:

1. through the thickness of the piece
2. along the length of each piece in a package
3. through the location of the piece within a package.

Multiple locations are tested to compensate for performance variation in the density and thermal properties of batt and blanket insulation material can occur across production lines and along the three-dimensional axis.

In-plant measurements include area coverage, density, recovered thickness, length, and width in accordance with ASTM C167. Laboratory measurements include thermal properties in accordance with ASTM C518 and C653.
